President Bola Tinubu has removed Maryam Sanda, convicted of culpable homicide for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, from the list of individuals granted presidential pardon.

Sanda was sentenced to death in 2020 by a Federal Capital Territory High Court.

The decision to remove her from the pardon list followed widespread public backlash and consultations with the Council of State and stakeholders.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy said in a statement on Wednesday: “The removal of Sanda and others convicted of serious crimes, including kidnapping, drug offences, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal firearms possession or trafficking, is in line with the President’s commitment to upholding justice and protecting public interest.”

The President has directed that individuals previously pardoned should have their sentences commuted rather than being fully discharged.

The Presidency stated that the review of the pardon list was guided by national security concerns, sensitivity to victims’ families, and the need to maintain public trust in the justice system.
