Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, widely known as AY Comedian, has spoken out about the growing pressure that social media exerts on people, especially the younger generation.
In a reflective post shared on his social media handles, the ace entertainer cautioned against the dangers of comparing one’s life to the seemingly perfect lifestyles displayed online.
According to him, most people only showcase their highlights while concealing the struggles behind the scenes.
“Social media pressure is real,” AY began. Too many people are trying to keep up with lives that don’t even exist. You see the highlights but not the hustle, the smiles but not the struggles,” he wrote, addressing the illusionary nature of online validation.
The award-winning comedian, who has built a reputation for blending humor with social commentary, urged his followers to embrace authenticity.
He emphasized that peace of mind should be valued above likes, comments, or followers.
“Remember, peace of mind is greater than online validation. Live your truth, not the filtered version of someone else’s,” AY added, rounding off his message with hashtags promoting mental health awareness and self-acceptance.
Going further, AY counseled young people not to be carried away by the luxurious lifestyles of celebrities that flood social media.
He warned that many of those flashy displays were simply for the ‘gram’a façade created to maintain appearances rather than reflect reality.
He noted that the constant desire to “feel among” or belong to the same social class as online influencers was a dangerous trap that could lead to frustration, debt, or emotional exhaustion.
Instead, he advised his followers to focus on their individual growth and live within their means.
