The National Council of State has given unanimous approval to the nomination of Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
His appointment follows the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Persecondnews reports that the endorsement was reached during a session of the Council of State held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday.
The meeting, which commenced around 1:30 p.m., brought together key national figures to deliberate on pressing governance matters, including leadership succession at INEC.
This is the second time President Tinubu has convened the National Council of State since assuming office in May 2023, signaling his continued reliance on the council’s advisory role in major national decisions.
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), joined the meeting virtually, while Vice President Kashim Shettima attended in his capacity as Vice Chairman of the Council.
Other attendees included the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, state governors, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and past leaders of the country.
The National Council of State serves as a critical advisory body to the President, offering guidance on policy issues, appointments, and other matters affecting national governance and stability.
