Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has confirmed that she is switching allegiance to Turkey, ending her long-running feud with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Monday, Ofili announced her decision, citing months of contemplation after a challenging phase where the Nigerian federation’s handling of her situation left her feeling disappointed.
Ofili noted that her switch was not financially motivated, saying, “This change comes from the heart, not from financial motives.”
She expressed gratitude to her coach, agent, sponsor, and loved ones for their support during this difficult time.
Ofili also appreciated her new home in Turkey, stating, “I’m truly grateful to have discovered a new home in Turkey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Ofili’s decision echoes that of other notable athletes, such as Francis Obikwelu, Gloria Alozie, and Femi Ogunode, who previously switched allegiance from Nigeria to represent other countries.
As she finalizes her transfer, Ofili will miss the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, but she is set to embark on a new chapter in her career, donning Turkish colours.
Amidst the transition, Ofili remains hopeful about her future, reflecting on her 2025 season: ‘It’s been a whirlwind of new experiences and significant decisions.
