A group of Niger Delta youth leaders staged a protest at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Towers in Abuja on Wednesday, blocking the entrance and exit gates.

The protesters, who arrived at the towers around 6 am, carried banners with inscriptions criticizing the company’s management and calling for the resignation of Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Ojulari, over alleged corruption and mismanagement.

The protest disrupted vehicular traffic on Herbert Macaulay Way in the Central Business District, with security agents diverting traffic to one lane of the dual carriageway.

Workers were forced to park their cars far away from the gates of the towers due to the protest.

The protesters also demanded the appointment of an indigene of the Niger Delta region as the GCEO of NNPCL, citing the need for representation and fairness.

Despite the disruption, the protest remained peaceful, with security agents ensuring that the situation did not escalate.

A representative of the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, appealed to the protesters, and they later cleared off the highway and blockade of the exit gate of the towers.

The protest highlights the growing concerns and frustrations among the Niger Delta youths regarding the management of the region’s oil resources.
