The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced the commencement of an investigation into a train derailment incident involving a Kaduna-bound train that occurred on Tuesday, August 26.

Persecondnews had previously reported that a passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed near Km 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, on Tuesday, causing multiple carriages to overturn and widespread panic among passengers.

According to a statement signed by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, preliminary reports suggest that six passengers were injured, but no fatalities.

The bureau confirmed that a go-team has been dispatched to the scene to collect evidence, engage with stakeholders, and conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., the NSIB Director General, has expressed sympathy for those affected by the incident.

He said: “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation.”

The Bureau stated that the investigation will examine both direct and underlying factors contributing to the derailment, with the goal of issuing recommendations to prevent future incidents.

The NSIB promised to provide updates as the investigation progresses, while confirming that support has been extended to all passengers impacted by the accident.
