In a desperate bid to draw attention to their plight, visually impaired protesters from the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind brought Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to a standstill on Monday, August 11.
The demonstrators explained that their grievances stem from the prolonged closure of their schools for over two years, saying repeated appeals to the government have been ignored.
“Our school has been shut for over two years despite repeated appeals to the government,” the group’s spokesperson said.
The protesters said the government’s failure has denied them educational opportunities, forcing many disabled persons to resort to street begging.
Persecondnews had earlier reported that the protest, which started by 11 am, led to the blocking of major access roads to the MMA, the Lagos airport wing for domestic flights.
The blockade prompted the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to issue a travel advisory for passengers travelling to and from the airport, via a statement released on Monday.
The statement reads: “This is a Travel Advisory for passengers and commuters to/from Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
“Due to an ongoing protest by the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind, traffic congestion is currently impacting access roads to the airport.
“To minimise disruptions, we advise passengers should: Check traffic updates before departing for the airport. Confirm flight status with your airline for any schedule changes. Use alternative routes where possible to avoid heavily congested areas.”
FAAN also apologize for any inconvenience caused by the traffic congestion and appreciated passengers’ patience and understanding, urging them to stay safe and remain updated.
