Oil Theft Crackdown: Military Dismantles 19 Illegal Refineries, Recovers N291m Crude

The Nigerian military says it has intensified its efforts to combat economic sabotage, kidnapping, and terrorism across the country with its Niger Delta’s “Operation Delta Safe” troops achieving significant success in crude oil theft.

In the past week alone, they have dismantled 19 illegal oil refining sites and thwarted crude oil theft valued at over N291 million.

Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, said on Thursday that troops destroyed key equipment used by oil thieves, including 18 crude oil cooking ovens, 32 dugout pits, and 21 storage tanks.

These operations also led to the arrest of 42 suspected oil thieves and the confiscation of 201,345 liters of stolen crude oil.

In Rivers and Delta States, troops apprehended a notorious cult leader, Prince Johnson Ishirim (alias Commander Junior), and 13 other suspected kidnappers.

In Bayelsa State, 28 oil thieves and several drug dealers were arrested in a raid on a criminal hideout in Southern Ijaw LGA.

Also in the South East, troops of Operation Udoka neutralized two suspected IPOB/ESN members and arrested 14 others.

Six kidnapped victims were rescued during raids in Anambra, Abia, and Imo States by the military.

In a separate intelligence-led operation in Udi LGA, Enugu State, troops rescued two kidnapped victims on July 14.

A suspected IPOB/ESN tax collector was arrested in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State, and N1.5 million in extorted funds was recovered.

Meanwhile, troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in coordination with air components and local security forces, conducted sweeping operations across Borno and Yobe States.

A statement said several Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists were neutralized, while others, including women and children, surrendered.

In Borno State, operations in towns like Bama, Gwoza, Kukawa, and Konduga yielded significant results. Eleven collaborators were arrested, and seven kidnapped victims were rescued.

Troops of Operation Fasin Yamma and Operation Safe Haven launched coordinated raids in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, and Katsina States.

Multiple terrorists were killed, nine arrested, and seven kidnapped persons rescued. In Sokoto’s Sabon Birni LGA, three suspected arms dealers were arrested with nine AK-47 rifles and 450 rounds of ammunition.

The military also reports that troops under Operation Whirl Stroke neutralized terrorists in Taraba and Benue States, arrested 13 suspects, and rescued five hostages.

In Kogi and Nasarawa States, troops seized weapons, motorcycles, and quantities of suspected cannabis and illicit drugs during raids.

Kangye reiterated the military’s dedication to defeating threats, restoring peace, and safeguarding national unity.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities.
