FCT NULGE calls off strike, orders members to resume work on Tuesday

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called off its three-month strike, directing all members to resume work immediately from midnight, Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

This decision came after the intervention of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who mandated that 10% of the Area Councils’ internally generated revenue be used to clear three months of outstanding salary arrears owed to local government employees.

NULGE, in a statement issued on Monday by its FCT Chairman, Abdullahi Kabi, after a meeting held at its State Secretariat in Gwagwalada, said: “The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, FCT Chapter, has announced the suspension of its three-month strike action, effective midnight, July 15, 2025.

“This decision follows the intervention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who directed the utilisation of the Area Councils’ 10% Internally Generated Revenue to offset three months’ salary arrears.

“The union’s State Executive Council meeting, held on July 14, 2025, at the State Secretariat in Gwagwalada, Abuja, resolved to suspend the strike after exhaustive deliberations and appeals from the Honourable Minister, FCT Traditional Council, and other key stakeholders.”

The union added that it would collaborate with a special committee constituted by the minister “to harmonise all outstanding arrears within two weeks, aiming for a holistic resolution through the National Assembly House Committee on FCT and ancillary matters.”

Kabi said the union would continue to engage with Area Council Chairmen to resolve issues related to members’ welfare, while stressing the union’s commitment to industrial stability.

He expressed appreciation to stakeholders, the public, and its members for their roles in resolving the impasse and for their understanding and cooperation throughout the strike period.

While the strike has been suspended, NULGE affirmed that it remains focused on resolving pending issues, including the implementation of the 40% peculiar allowance effective from January 2023, salary adjustments under CONHESS/CONMESS and CONPSS, the N35,000 wage award, unremitted pension deductions, and arrears of promotion and other entitlements.

Persecondnews reports that the union had embarked on strike in March after failing to reach an agreement with the Area Council Chairmen on the issues.
