Ogun Gov. Dapo Abiodun, has officially confirmed the death of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing it as a monumental loss to the state and the nation at large.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Abiodun announced that the revered monarch passed on at the age of 91, bringing to an end a 65-year reign marked by visionary leadership, cultural revival, and community transformation.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland.

He joined his ancestors today, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general,” Abiodun stated.

The governor described the day as one of “double tragedy” for Nigeria, as the death of Oba Adetona coincided with the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in a London hospital.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old and became one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected monarchs.

He was widely admired for his commitment to progress, unity, and cultural preservation throughout his reign.

“Oba Adetona was a remarkable royal father whose reign marked a transformative era for Ijebuland. His dedication to the welfare of his people was evident in his tireless efforts to promote education, healthcare, and economic development,” the governor noted.

Under his leadership, Ijebuland emerged as a beacon of modern development in Ogun State, recording significant strides in infrastructure and social advancement.

The monarch was also instrumental in elevating the Ojude Oba Festival to global prominence, turning it into a symbol of cultural pride and tourism excellence.

Abiodun praised the monarch’s wisdom, humility, and enduring influence in national affairs, saying his values will continue to guide future generations.

“His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace, and may we continue to uphold the values he instilled in us during his illustrious reign,” the statement read.

Born in 1934, Oba Adetona was not only a traditional ruler but also a moral compass and voice of reason in national discourse. His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s traditional leadership.

Details of the burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Awujale-in-Council in the coming days.
