The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the winner’s share doubling to $1 million.

The total prize pool has also seen a 45% boost, reaching $3.475 million.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed the organization’s commitment to advancing women’s football in Africa, saying, “The confederation is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa.

“The 100% increase in the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 and the 45% total increase in the prize money for this competition should contribute to the increase of the salaries of women football players, coaches, and employees.”

Persecondnews reports that the winning team will take home $1 million, while the runner-up will receive $500,000.

The team that finishes in third place will earn $350,000, and the fourth-place finisher will receive $300,000 while teams that reach the quarterfinals will each earn $200,000.

Teams that finish third in their group will receive $150,000, while teams that finish fourth in their group will earn $125,000 each.

Motsepe highlighted the growing popularity of women’s football, noting the substantial increase in fans, broadcasting viewers, and sponsors.

The 2024 WAFCON will feature 12 national teams competing for the top prize, with the tournament set to kick off in Morocco.
