At least 21 people have died and more than 10 are still missing after severe flooding devastated parts of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State.
The disaster, which occurred on Wednesday night following a torrential downpour, was confirmed by Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in a press briefing in Minna on Thursday.
The affected communities include Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa within Mokwa town.
The floodwaters submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses.
In the wake of the disaster, three individuals—a woman and her two children—were rescued alive and are currently receiving treatment for injuries and shock at Mokwa General Hospital.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with NSEMA collaborating with the Mokwa Local Government, local divers, and volunteers to find survivors and recover additional bodies.
