Nigeria Shines at ITTF World Para Future Tournament in Jordan

Team Nigeria made a powerful performance at the just concluded ITTF World Para Future tournament in Amman, Jordan, showcasing its dominance in para table tennis.

The Nigerian team excelled at the championship, claiming an impressive 5 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze medals over the three-day event, securing a spot among the world’s top three teams.

The team’s success was marked by outstanding performances from its athletes.

Bolawa Akingbemisilu triumphed in the Men’s Class 4-5, edging out compatriot Isau Ogunkunle 3-2 in an intense all-Nigerian final.

Faith Obazuaye delivered a commanding 3-1 victory over Kehinde Lawal to take the top spot on the podium in the Women’s Class 9-10.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded Team Nigeria on its outstanding performance, attributing the team’s success to the perfect blend of vision, preparation, and belief.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko commended the athletes’ resilience and brilliance, as well as the technical team and leadership of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN).

With the singles events concluded, Team Nigeria is now setting its eyes on the doubles competition, determined to build on its momentum and make a strong push for the overall team title.

On his part, NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, praised the brilliance of the athletes and the technical team and leadership of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN).

“This is a proud moment for Nigeria,” Olopade said.

“I must commend the dedication of the team, especially the leadership of PCN President Sunday Odebode, who has remained committed to excellence and inclusion in Nigerian sports.”

Other notable performances at the tournament included Abiola Adesope’s silver medal in the Men’s Class 9, where he narrowly missed gold in a gripping final against Iurii Nozdrunov of Russia.

Veteran player Tajudeen Agunbiade secured bronze after his semifinal loss to Nozdrunov.

Kape Oputa earned bronze medals in both the Men’s Class 9 and Women’s Class 4-5 events.

The Nigerian team’s success was also marked by Olufemi Alabi’s gold medal in the Men’s Class 10 singles, where he defeated Iraq’s Shafeeq Hikmat.

Alabi and Obazuaye later took gold in the Mixed Doubles Classes 17-18, ending Nigeria’s campaign on a high note while Adesope and Agunbiade also captured gold in the Men’s Doubles Classes 14-18.
