Niger Delta Sports Festival Kicks Off in Uyo, Aligns with RHINSE Initiative

The Niger Delta Sports Festival kicked off in grand style on Wednesday, celebrating the region’s vibrant cultural heritage and impressive athletic talent.

The opening ceremony, held at the Uyo Township Stadium, was a grand affair attended by several high-profile guests, including the Governors of Akwa Ibom and Ondo States, Pst. Umo Eno and Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, respectively.

The festival promises to be an exciting showcase of sportsmanship and entertainment, featuring 40 music and comedy talents from the Niger Delta region, along with cultural dancers from the NDDC states.

The event will also feature live performances by international afrobeat star Phyno and Eben.

With about 3,000 athletes and over 500 officials competing in 17 sports, the festival is set to be an unforgettable experience.

Persecondnews reports that Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), declared the festival open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

NSC Director General, Mr. Bukola Olopade, commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and all stakeholders involved in organizing the festival, noting its alignment with the RHINSE agenda—Renewed Hope in Nigeria for Sports Economy.

“This is a brilliant effort by the NDDC and all those involved in making this festival a reality,” Olopade said.

“It perfectly aligns with our RHINSE agenda, which is rooted in the Renewed Hope mandate of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are truly proud and excited about this event”.

A major highlight of the festival is the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) Initiative, designed to identify and nurture young talent.

The initiative will see promising athletes from across the country competing as the 38th state at the upcoming National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.p

The festival, which runs from April 1 to 8, features over 3,000 athletes and 500 officials competing in 17 sports.

With its focus on grassroots sports development and youth empowerment, the Niger Delta Sports Festival is poised to leave a lasting legacy in the zone.
