Fire on Tuesday swept through the Ladipo market in Lagos, ravaging several shops and destroying goods valued at millions of naira.

The fire caused extensive damage to a wide range of products, including electronics, generators, bicycles, vehicle spare parts, furniture, mobile phones, household appliances, and motorcycles.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said there was no record of injury or loss of life.

Oke-Osanyintolu said that the agency received distress calls through its 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at about 00.09hrs concerning the fire outbreak.

He said: “LASEMA immediately activated the state’s emergency response plans and response team from its Cappa Base.

“Upon arrival at 00.16hrs at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that a warehouse surrounded by shops was gutted by the fire.

“Investigations revealed that the inferno was caused by an electric power surge after public electricity power supply was restored to the area.

“Valuable goods worth a fortune were however, destroyed by the inferno.”

Following the incident, LASEMA, in collaboration with other emergency responders, carried out a thorough assessment of the damage and provided the warehouse occupants with guidance on essential safety precautions to mitigate the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.

A multi-agency response team, comprising LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, LRU Fire Fighters, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, collaborated to execute the response effort.

Persecondnews recalls that a similar incident occurred on Tuesday January 14, in Ahia Mgbede opposite the New Motor Spare Parts Market in Nnewi, the commercial hub of Anambra State.
