Nigeria’s badminton sensation, Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori, has secured his 7th African title, winning the men’s singles final of the All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Douala, Cameroon.
Persecondnews reports that Opeyori defeated Egypt’s Adham Hatem Elgamal 2-0 (21-7, 23-21) in the final match on Sunday.
Opeyori’s dominance was evident throughout the tournament, as he began with a solid win over Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga in the opening round.
He then advanced past Mauritius’ Georges Paul in the quarterfinals and Morocco’s Driss Bourroum in the semifinals.
In the final match, Opeyori showcased his experience, composure, and technical brilliance, taking the first set convincingly at 21-7.
He then edged a tense second set 23-21 to seal the gold medal.
This victory extends Opeyori’s reign as Africa’s best, adding another gold medal to his collection.
Persecondnews recalls that he first won the continental title in 2019 and has since claimed consecutive championships from 2022 to 2025.
Opeyori is now a five-time consecutive champion of the All-Africa Senior Badminton Championships.
Opeyori’s latest victory solidifies his position as Africa’s top badminton player, taking his total continental singles titles to seven.
Additionally, he boasts an impressive record of two All-Africa Games gold medals, secured in 2019 and 2023/2024.
