A catastrophic gas explosion rocked Sabon Wuse in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving a trail of destruction and business owners reeling from significant losses.
The blast, which occurred on Saturday night, ravaged several vehicles, shops, and foodstuffs when a gas tanker exploded while offloading at a local filling station, as reported by Persecondnews.
According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), no lives were lost but the destruction was extensive.
Witnesses reported that the explosion sent shockwaves through the community, causing panic among residents.
“The fire was so intense that its flames could be seen from different parts of the town. People ran out of their homes in fear,” said Musa Aliyu, a resident of Sabon Wuse.
Persecondnews recalls that a devastating petrol tanker explosion occurred in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State on January 18, claiming the lives of at least 96 people, with 69 others injured.
The tragedy happened when a tanker conveying petrol crashed, and another tanker was brought to transfer the contents.
Unfortunately, residents were consumed while scooping petrol when the scene.
Baba-Arah confirmed the death toll and injury count, saying a mass burial was conducted for the victims, with 20 shops also burnt in the fire.
Persecondnews recalls that Nigeria has experienced several petrol tanker explosions in recent times.
In October 2024, a similar blast in Jigawa state killed 147 people.
