Erling Haaland’s advice to Arsenal’s players to “stay humble” after Manchester City’s draw with the Gunners in September has come back to haunt him.
Arsenal exacted revenge on Sunday, thrashing City 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium, with Haaland’s equalizing goal in the 55th minute proving to be a mere consolation.
As the goals flew in for Arsenal, Haaland was reminded of his earlier advice, with the Gunners’ players and fans taking great delight in rubbing it in his face.
Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was on the receiving end of Haaland’s anger in September, even mocked Haaland’s trademark celebration after scoring Arsenal’s third goal.
The Emirates Stadium’s PA system also got in on the act, playing Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” after the final whistle, much to the delight of the Arsenal fans.
Haaland’s team, meanwhile, slumped to their seventh Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them nine points behind Arsenal in the table.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was left to rue his team’s collapse, saying, “The feeling is why we have not done in the last 20, 25 minutes what we had done well for the first 60.”
John Stones, meanwhile, apologized to the traveling City fans, saying, “Sorry to the fans that have traveled to come and watch that. How we played in the last 30 minutes was not acceptable. Personally and collectively, it’s not us.”
