Award-winning filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has shared the story of his humble beginnings in Nollywood, recalling how he landed his first-ever role in the 1998 classic movie Saworoide, directed by legendary filmmaker Tunde Kelani.

The film, written by the late Prof. Akinwunmi Isola, featured Afolayan in the role of “Aresejabata,” marking the start of a stellar career in the Nigerian film industry.

In a recent interview, Kunle Afolayan described how he auditioned for the role, revealing that it was a turning point in his life.

According to him, the opportunity to work under Tunde Kelani, one of Nigeria’s most revered filmmakers, was a dream come true.

“I was relatively unknown at the time, but I was eager and passionate about acting. When I got the role of Aresejabata, it felt like the stars were aligning for me,” Afolayan said.

Saworoide is a political satire that uses traditional Yoruba folklore to critique corruption and governance in Nigeria.

The film became an instant classic and remains one of Nollywood’s most celebrated productions.

Afolayan’s portrayal of Aresejabata, a young and idealistic drummer caught in the struggle for justice and leadership, resonated deeply with audiences, earning him widespread recognition.

Reflecting on the experience, Afolayan credited Tunde Kelani for mentoring him during the production.

“Working with Tunde Kelani was like attending a masterclass. He not only directed the film but also taught us to value culture, discipline, and the art of storytelling.

” I learned so much from him, lessons that have shaped my career and the way I approach filmmaking today,” he said.

Although Afolayan initially stepped into Nollywood as an actor, his passion for storytelling quickly evolved into filmmaking.

He cited his early experience on Saworoide as the inspiration behind his decision to delve deeper into the creative process.

Today, Afolayan is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most innovative filmmakers, with critically acclaimed works such as The Figurine, Citation, and Anikulapo to his name.

The role of Aresejabata remains particularly special to Afolayan, who described it as the foundation of his career.

He recalled how the film’s success helped him build connections in the industry, paving the way for more acting opportunities and eventually launching him into directing and producing.

“It all started with Saworoide. That role gave me visibility and the confidence to believe I could do more in the industry,” he explained.

Over two decades later, he has become a household name in Nollywood, celebrated for his dedication to promoting African culture through cinema.

Despite his global success, he remains deeply appreciative of his roots and the opportunities that led him to where he is today.

“It started well and is going well,” he said, expressing gratitude for the journey that began in 1998.
