Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens made a stunning debut at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia, defeating test-playing nation New Zealand by two runs on Monday.

Nigeria’s cricket team made history at the Women’s World Cup, despite a rain-delayed match.

Captain Lucky Piety led the charge, hitting the country’s first-ever six in the tournament. By the end of the 13-over innings, Nigeria had scored 65 runs, losing six wickets in the process.

New Zealand, ranked fourth in the world, elected to field first, but Nigeria’s batters held their own, setting a competitive target.

In the second innings, Nigeria’s bowlers took a steady approach, eventually dismissing New Zealand for 63 runs for the loss of six wickets, securing a thrilling two-run victory.

The win marks a historic moment for Nigerian cricket, as the Junior Female Yellow Greens proved they can compete with the best teams in the world.

Nigeria is one of 16 countries competing in the tournament, which is being held in Malaysia.

The team is led by Lucky Piety, a former NCF National U-17 Championships prodigy, and features several players who have already represented the women’s senior national team.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens had earlier drawn their first match against Samoa due to a wet outfield, but they bounced back strongly to defeat New Zealand.

In spite of the rain, Nigeria’s team showed determination and skill, outplaying their more experienced opponents.

Persecondnews reports that Captain Lucky Piety and bowler Sarah Bakhita played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s triumph, delivering standout performances that propelled their team to victory.
