The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024 to August 2025.
Following consultations with CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, a decision was made to postpone the tournament, citing the need for additional time to upgrade infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to meet the required standards for a successful event.
Despite the postponement, CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, on Tuesday commended the host countries for their progress in constructing and upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities.
“I would like to express my deep gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership, commitment, and the good progress that has been made,” Motsepe said.
Motsepe also expressed his confidence that the host countries will meet the requisite CAF standards by August 2025.
“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship,” he said.
The postponement of the tournament may have implications for the new Super Eagles coach, Éric Sékou Chelle, who was unveiled on January 13.
Chelle was expected to supervise the Super Eagles B team preparation ahead of the CHAN 2024 tournament, but the postponement may alter his plans with the squad.
