Tragedy has struck twice for Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who announced the heartbreaking loss of his mother on New Year’s Day, barely months after his father’s passing in mid-November.
The devastating news, shared by Nwabali on social media, has left fans and well-wishers reeling in shock.
This double blow comes as a cruel twist of fate, as Nwabali’s father had passed away shortly after his son’s impressive performance for the Super Eagles in their 2025 AFCON qualification match against Benin Republic, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The goalkeeper had taken to social media earlier on New Year’s Day to reflect on the past year, expressing optimism for the future.
“2024 was a good year, we’re doubling everything in 2025,” he had written, thanking his teams and fans.
The sudden loss of his mother has left Nwabali reeling. “RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” he wrote, accompanied by tears and heartbreak emojis.
The goalkeeper’s emotional message has sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans and fellow athletes.
The Nigeria Football Federation and Super Eagles had previously commiserated with Nwabali following the death of his father.
The goalkeeper’s strength and resilience will be tested in the coming days, but for now, he is surrounded by love and support.
