Death toll climbs to 22 in Anambra palliative distribution tragedy

Death toll from the devastating stampede incident in Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, has risen to 22, police have confirmed.

Persecondnews reported that the tragic incident occurred on Saturday during a palliative distribution event organized by a philanthropist in Okija.

State command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who gave an update on the development in a statement on Sunday, said Police Commissioner Nnaghe Itam has visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede are receiving treatment.

He said that Itam sympathized with the families and friends of the deceased while he wished those injured quick recovery.

An investigation into the unfortunate event was ongoing and that the command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people during and after the festive period, Ikenga said.
