The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the new Port Harcourt refinery is more than 90 percent completed.

This announcement was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, during a visit by labour leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to the facility in Rivers State on Monday.

Kyari specifically referred to the 150,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which is part of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC).

The PHRC has two refineries, including the 60,000 bpd facility, which commenced operations last week and is currently refining at 70% capacity.

Persecondnews reports that the completion of the new refinery is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduce its reliance on imported petroleum products.

The oil company, in late November, fulfilled its promise of restreaming the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), marking the commencement of crude oil processing from the plant and delivery of petroleum products into the market.

According to a statement by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, trucks began loading petroleum products, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or petrol, Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) or diesel, and Household Kerosene (HHK) or kerosene.

Kyari, during a brief ceremony to mark the commencement of product loading at the refinery, said the loadout activities are a monumental achievement for Nigeria, signifying a new era of energy independence and economic growth for the country.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and understanding towards the rehabilitation project.
