The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked a viral video circulating online, which purportedly shows uniformed personnel scooping fuel from an overturned tanker.
The video has sparked intense backlash against the NPF, having circulated online for the past week and drawn widespread criticism and condemnation.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the individuals in a viral video are not members of the NPF.
Instead, they are uniformed personnel from a neighbouring francophone country.
Adejobi vehemently condemned the spread of unverified content aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the NPF.
He reaffirmed their dedication to upholding discipline and professionalism and prioritising the safety and security of all Nigerians under the guidance of the Inspector-General of Police.
Adejobi said: “Acts that compromise the force’s reputation are deemed unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
He appealed to citizens to verify information before sharing it in order to curb the spread of misinformation and foster national unity.
The statement reads: “The viral video circulating in the media that depicts uniformed personnel in camouflage scooping fuel from the wreckage of an accidented tanker was just released to discredit the Nigeria Police Force.
“It is essential to clarify that the individuals in the video are not officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
“They are uniformed personnel from a neighbouring francophone country whose camouflage uniforms bear a resemblance to the Nigeria Police’s.”
