Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has been arrested and charged with stealing a mobile phone at a nightclub in Madrid, according to reports.

The 26-year-old Portuguese international was detained at La Riviera nightclub in the early hours of September 8 after a 58-year-old man accused him of taking his phone without permission.

According to Spanish daily El Mundo, Nunes allegedly became angry when the man attempted to photograph him in the restroom without his consent and took the phone.

Police discovered the phone in Nunes’ possession when they arrived on the scene.

Another version, according to witnesses, claims that the victim reportedly touched the player with the phone in his hand, to which the player reacted angrily and mistakenly thought he had taken his photograph.

The 25-year-old spent some time behind bars before being bailed pending a trial.

A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid confirmed that a Portuguese national born in 1998 was arrested on suspicion of phone theft.

Nunes, who joined Manchester City in 2022, had been in Madrid with friends after not being called up for Portugal’s international duty.

He recently played in City’s 4-0 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava.

The incident is set to go to trial, with a well-placed source stating, “This matter will now be resolved by way of a trial in court.”

Manchester City has not commented on the situation.
