House of Representatives member Chris Nkwonta (Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency in Abia State) has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nkwonta announced his defection on Wednesday in a letter the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, read on the floor of the House.

However, Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Aliyu Madaki opposed Nkwonta’s defection, citing Order 68 of the 1999 Constitution.

Madaki argued that a lawmaker can only abandon the party that sponsored their election if there is an internal crisis in that party.

His point of order was ruled out of order by the Speaker, who said there is a crisis in the PDP.

Abbas said: “The information available to me shows there is a faction.”
