Smart video surveillance, critical to safety at major sporting events, says digital expert

As the world gears up for another season of major sporting events, concerns about safety and crowd management are once again at the forefront.

According to Ghassan Azzi, Sales Director for Africa at Western Digital, smart video surveillance systems are becoming indispensable in ensuring the security of participants, the public, and infrastructure at these large-scale gatherings.

“The importance of smart video surveillance cannot be overstated, especially during major sporting events where the stakes are incredibly high,” said Azzi. “It’s not just about monitoring, but about having the capability to analyze and react in real-time to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Modern video surveillance systems face unique challenges, particularly the need for cameras to operate around the clock, providing continuous coverage. This, Azzi explained, requires storage solutions that combine high capacity with exceptional endurance to manage the massive volume of high-resolution video streams.

“Cameras must be able to record 24/7, and the storage solutions behind them need to match that level of reliability,” said Azzi. “Western Digital’s WD Purple® Pro hard drives, for instance, are designed with this in mind, offering capacities of up to 24TB* while ensuring long-term performance, even under extreme conditions.”

Technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming video surveillance, according to him.

Azzi highlighted that today’s surveillance cameras are no longer limited to recording video; they are now capable of real-time data analysis thanks to AI chips embedded within the devices.

This enables them to deliver more detailed and accurate data, significantly improving security measures.

“Our smart video storage systems are built to support this advanced technology,” said Azzi.

“The WD Purple® Pro drives, equipped with AllFrame™ AI technology, are designed to handle the demands of modern surveillance, supporting up to 32 AI streams for deep learning analysis and ensuring uninterrupted video playback.”

On adaptability across environments, he noted that sporting events often take place in varied and sometimes harsh environments, demanding robust surveillance systems.

Azzi pointed out that Western Digital’s products are built to withstand these challenges. For instance, WD Purple® SC QD101 Ultra Endurance microSD™ cards are engineered for durability and reliability, even in extreme weather conditions.

“Whether it’s scorching heat or freezing cold, our solutions are designed to keep functioning at their best,” said Azzi. “This is crucial for maintaining security in any environment.”

In addition to security, he said video surveillance plays a pivotal role in managing crowds and infrastructure during major events.

According to Azzi, high-capacity smart video storage solutions enable organizers to monitor crowd movements effectively and manage data from multiple cameras, which is essential for responding quickly to any situation.

“Clear, detailed video footage is vital for crowd management,” Azzi emphasized. “Our WD Purple® Pro drives allow for the consolidation of video from multiple sources, making it easier to analyze and act on the data in real time.”

As major sporting events continue to draw large crowds, the role of smart video surveillance systems becomes increasingly critical.

Western Digital’s cutting-edge technologies, with their robust storage capabilities and advanced performance, provide the tools necessary to meet the evolving challenges of event security, ensuring safety and smooth operations.
