In its bid to boost content creation in West Africa, Meta has introduced a monetization policy that will enable Nigerian and Ghanaian content creators to earn money on Facebook.
According to a statement from the company on Monday, the two features—In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Facebook Ads on Reels—will enable creators to earn money for crafting original videos and cultivating community.
The statement reads: “Available from today, eligible creators in Nigeria and Ghana will be able to earn money for their video and reels content, with support in over 30 languages globally.”
Meta pointed out that to use either product, creators must pass and remain compliant with Facebook’s Partner Monetisation Policies and Content Monetisation Policies, and they must be at least 18 years old.
Additionally, for in-stream ads, Meta said creators must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as having a minimum of 5,000 followers.
Persecondnews recalls that the latest development is an offshoot of the meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Mr. Nick Clegg, a former UK deputy prime minister and Meta’s President of Global Affairs, at the State House in Abuja in March.
Clegg thanked the president for an executive order he issued that allowed the Meta-backed deep-sea cable to land in Nigeria.
He said: “It is an extraordinary infrastructure project. When it comes on stream in the first quarter of 2025, it will be twice as much as the capacity of all subsea cables that exist.
“We buried the cable 50 per cent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed. It is more powerful and more extensive in terms of its geographical connectivity.
“It could yield up to 37 billion dollars worth of increase in economic activity in the next two or three years across the African continent.”
Clegg also said Meta will introduce in June 2024 a feature on its Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetise their content to enable them to earn a living using the app.
