The Lagos State Police Command has taken two police officers into custody in connection with an unauthorized operation that resulted in the death of a civilian.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Saturday, the two officers, whose names and ranks were not given, were members of the state taskforce.

Persecondnews recalls that a disturbing video online showed motorcycle riders repeatedly driving over a lifeless body, sparking widespread outrage.

Amidst speculation that the victim was a police officer, the Lagos State Police Command felt compelled to address the incident and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death.

The police authorities have clarified that the person killed in the incident was not a police officer but a civilian, contrary to earlier speculation and rumours.

In a tweet on his official X page, Hundeyin said: “Two police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, went on illegal duty, taking some civilians with them to shore up their numbers.

He said that the illegal mission led to a confrontation with motorcycle riders, ultimately resulting in the fatal shooting of one of the civilians.

He said: “While disciplinary actions have commenced on the already detained police officers, search is on for their civilian accomplices.

“Investigations have commenced to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators of this dastardly act.”
