WCQ: Nigeria slump to Benin Republic 2-1, remain 5th in group

The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost 2-1 to the Benin Republic in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers on Monday.
Nigeria got off to the best possible start in the 29th minute, with Raphael Onyedika smashing in a powerful shot from the edge of the Beninese goal area to put the Super Eagles ahead.

However, joy turned sour for Nigerians as Jodel Dossou benefited from a defensive blunder and calmly slotted the ball past the onrushing Stanley Nwabali to tie the game 1-1.

Finidi Steve Mounie’s right-footed goal from a corner shortly before halftime exposed George’s tactical error once more.

Despite the arrival of Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu, and Ibrahim Olawoyin, the Super Eagles were helpless in the final third and transition.

The Eagles are fifth in the qualification group with three points from four games.
