A mining site collapse in Galkogo village, in Niger State’s Shiroro Local Government Area, has claimed one life and trapped 39 other miners.
A company – African Minerals and Logistics Limited – owns the mining site.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the incident.
The Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said in a statement on Tuesday that rainfall impacts, which softened the soil, were the cause of the collapse.
He said:”As of Monday, June 3, 2024, it was reported that one fatality had been confirmed, six individuals had been rescued with critical injuries, and approximately 30 people, including site manager Alhaji Ibrahim Ishaku, remained trapped.
“The rescuers had to run for their lives as the mine site kept collapsing inside Galkogo village due to the unacceptable nature of that environment as a result of banditry.
“Rescue efforts have been intensified with the deployment of excavators to aid in the recovery process.”
