An explosion occurred when a tanker transporting liquefied natural gas overturned at the Obiri-Ikwerre flyover on the East-West Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, claiming the lives of two people.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion happened about 9:25 a.m. when the tanker overturned while attempting to navigate the bypass at the flyover, instantly bursting into flames and crushing a salon car with two people inside.

Persecondnews recalls that in May, a fuel-laden tanker exploded along the Eleme axis of the same East-West Road, claiming about five lives and burning over 60 cars.

An eyewitness reported that in the latest incident, two car occupants were trapped before they could escape and were roasted.

The State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and the number of casualties.

She said:”Yes, I can confirm that two persons died in the tanker fire. Myself and the Police Commissioner are on the ground as I speak to you.

“The fire has been put out, but the area is still dangerous because the gas is still licking.

“So motorists are advised to take alternative routes to avoid any further casualties. The investigation is ongoing.“
