Following a breakdown of negotiations on the national minimum wage and electricity tariff hike, the Organized Labour has announced an indefinite nationwide strike.
Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), declared the strike at a joint press conference with the National Labour Congress (NLC) leadership in Abuja on Friday.
The labour leaders explained that the decision became imperative after the Federal Government failed to meet the deadline for concluding negotiations on a new minimum wage by the end of May, as previously requested.
“In light of this persistent inaction, we, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), hereby issue a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government.
“We reiterate that since the National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise has not been concluded and the agreed wage passed into law, the hike in electricity tariff has not been reversed, and the categorization of consumers into bands has not stopped as demanded, Nigerian workers are compelled by these failures to embark on an indefinite nationwide industrial action beginning on Monday, June 3, 2024, to press home our demands,” Osifo said.
According to Persecondnews, labour first demanded a minimum wage of N615,000 but later negotiated it down to N500,000 and then N497,000.
However, the government and private sector counteroffered with a proposal of N60, 000 during the last tripartite meeting.
