At least three worshippers have been confirmed in Sunday’s mosque collapse in the Papa-Ajao area of Mushin, Lagos, reports Persecondnews.

The incident occurred on Yusuf Street and left about seven people injured.

The incident happened about 1:40 p.m. as the worshippers prepared to observe afternoon (Suhr) prayer.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said a preliminary investigation carried out upon arrival at the scene revealed that an excavator clearing the road recklessly hit the mosque (a storey building) by the roadside, which resulted in the mosque collapsing as prayer was about to commence.

They immediately rushed four victims to the hospital, he said, adding that the rubble trapped a total of 10 people.

“Search and rescue of the victims trapped under the rubbles under the supervision of the PS was conducted with the aid of the agency’s heavy-duty equipment, a crane, a hiab, and an excavator.

“Following an extensive exercise, the final casualty report on the above incident is that there were three fatalities and seven casualties, varying in severity.

“The affected buildings have been leveled to ground zero,” he said.
