President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi took the constitutional oath on Tuesday as the President of Egypt for a third consecutive term of six years in office, ending in 2030.

Sisi pledged to uphold the republican system and defend the interests of the people during the ceremony at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

Persecondnews reports that the New Administrative Capital (NAC) is a new urban community in Cairo Governorate, Egypt, and a satellite of Cairo City.

The six-year term is set to be the 69-year-old’s last, unless he is given the green light through a constitutional amendment prolonging his tenure.

Sisi rose to power on the back of mass protests, and after he was sworn in, he promised to “protect the republican system, respect the constitution and the law, safeguard the people’s interests, and preserve the independence of the nation and the unity of land.”

“I reaffirm my commitment to continuing the journey of nation-building and fulfilling the aspirations of the Egyptian people in building a modern democratic state.”

He reiterated that his top priorities are safeguarding the nation’s security and achieving development and progress “in the turbulent regional surroundings.”
