The Biennial Sports Fiesta of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially opened in Abuja on Sunday, with athletes from the national oil company’s three zones participating.

Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, said in his opening remarks on Sunday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium that the theme of the event, “Healthy Workforce, Productive Organisation,” symbolized the company’s belief in physical well-being and teamwork in achieving organizational goals.

He said: “From a global perspective, sports has always been a competitive endeavor. However, coming closer home here at NNPC Ltd., it is beyond just competing for medals, accolades, and laurels.

“Let me therefore inform all our sporting contingent here that, just like in the Olympics, participation is the most important medal, because everyone here is a winner in their own right, irrespective of their final standing on the medal table.”

The GCEO, represented by the MD NNPC Foundation, Mr. Emmanuela Arukwe, said the theme is apt considering that it resonates “perfectly with the true essence of the competition as a veritable platform for fostering teamwork and staff bonding.

“Attaining employee physical fitness and well-being and, most importantly, ensuring productivity through a healthy workforce.”

Mr. Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO), NNPCL, said fair play should be the watchword of every participant.

He stated that the NNPCL is fully “prepared to defeat the Super Eagles,” a selected side that Austin Okocha will captain prior to the match between the NNPCL and the former Super Eagles legends.

Persecondnews reports that the event will see the company’s employees competing in 13 games, namely football, basketball, volleyball, chess, squash, scrabble, 8-ball pool, golf, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming, and athletics.

The tournament will also serve as a platform for selecting NNPC Ltd.’s potential flag bearers at the forthcoming Nigeria Oil & Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) in April 2024, where the company will defend its title of Overall Winner, a feat it has maintained over the years
