Following the explosion that quaked Ibadan to its foundation on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu has offered his heartfelt sympathies to the victims of the avoidable tragedy.

Tinubu, in strong terms, called for immediate punishment for those involved in the inexcusable explosion that killed two people and wounded about 80 others.

In a statement late Wednesday and given to Persecondnews, Tinubu said: “Those behind the inexcusable and reckless behavior that has created the conditions for this sad incident to occur must be fished out and punished.

“I commiserate with the government and people of Oyo State and call on all concerned agencies of government to unravel the circumstances that led to this tragedy with alacrity.

“I have directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Oyo State Government to offer immediate and comprehensive relief to the victims.”

According to Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde, who visited the site in the Bodija area of Ibadan, preliminary investigations revealed that explosives stored for use in illegal mining operations were to blame for the blast.

He said: “We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to conduct comprehensive search and rescue operations.

“It was not immediately clear who stored the explosives, and no arrest has been made as of the time of reporting, but Makinde assured that “the investigations are ongoing, and all those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”
