From introspection, Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s political trajectory appeared to have been defined by a sequence of fortunate occurrences, one that seemingly established him as an individual whose life is intricately intertwined with fortuitous circumstances.
What is in a name?
When playwright William Shakespeare asked the question, “What’s in a name?” in Romeo and Juliet, he was referring to the idea that names themselves are a convention to distinguish things or people, but they do not have any worth or meaning.
The names of the new Ondo State Governor Lucky, Orímîsàn, and Aiyédatiwa” are powerful names that are fatalistic. Each of the names speaks volumes about how destiny will push him to the rightful position no matter the opposition and twists and turns of his political career. His names have thrust him into power fortuitously.
Who then says names are not important?
May our names work for us and catapult us to where we should be.
Lucky is success or otherwise that comes by chance; Orímîsàn – my destiny is good and Aiyedatiwa – the world has become ours; we are in control of the situation – and truly he is today as he was sworn in as governor a few hours ago by the State Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola at the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital.
This followed the death of ailing Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in the early hours of Wednesday.
The inauguration of his administration as the Governor of Ondo State represents the apex of a storyline characterised by unforeseen developments.
The path that led to Aiyedatiwa’s appointment as interim deputy governor was anything but traditional. The unfolding of events was not the product of assiduously striving efforts or strategic political manoeuvring; instead, it was an outcome dictated by pure providence.
The extended health complications that befell Governor Akeredolu created an opportunity for Aiyedatiwa to assume office, thereby establishing him as a prominent figure in the political landscape of the state.
The subsequent political commotion, which was allegedly fuelled by Governor Akeredolu’s hesitancy to transfer power to his deputy, precipitated a month-long crisis. The intervention of President Bola Tinubu served as a pivotal moment, facilitating a resolution that prioritised peacekeeping and the preservation of the existing state of affairs. Aiyedatiwa demonstrated a conciliatory approach to governance through his pledge to include all commissioners and officials, thereby demonstrating his dedication to inclusivity.
The importance of Aiyedatiwa’s good fortune becomes more apparent in light of the endeavours to obstruct his ascent to political office.
Political gladiators and other external forces endeavoured to obstruct his ascension to the position of acting deputy governor. Nevertheless, similar to the symbolism inherent in his name, fortune appeared to Aiyedatiwa’s advantage, enabling him to surmount these challenges.
The unfortunate demise of Governor Akeredolu, which transpired during his medical treatment in Germany, serves to emphasise the advantageous course of Aiyedatiwa’s political career. Some hold the belief that his name, “Lucky,” functions as a symbolic mystical wand, exerting an influence over his ongoing ascent and impact within the realm of Ondo State politics.
His ascent from “political opposition” within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to become Akeredolu’s deputy in 2020 to his current position as gubernatorial candidate exemplifies a sequence of fortuitous circumstances.
As Aiyedatiwa has assumed the position of Governor, his good fortune transcends political spheres and encompasses his capacity to once again secure his life, thereby assuming control of the state’s affairs until next year when the life of the two-term current administration will end.
The narrative about Lucky Aiyedatiwa can be characterised as one in which fortune, both literally and figuratively, has significantly influenced his political fate, culminating in his becoming a figure whose name is emblematic of fortuitous developments in Ondo State’s political landscape.
