Liverpool quest for the Premier League title get a massive boost as they temporarily go top of the log after Darwin Nunez ended his goal drought in a 2-0 win at Burnley on Boxing Day.
The Uruguayan striker had gone 12 games over 600 minutes without a goal, he got the traveling Liverpool fans bouncing in the early stage of the game at Turf Moore after his curling effort beat Burnley goalie James Trafford.
Liverpool registered eight shots on target in the first half but couldn’t double their lead with Nunez goal the only difference in the half.
Burnley were much better after the interval, but looked to have gone 2-0 down again when Harvey Elliott side-footed into the bottom corner.
His effort was ruled out for Mohamed Salah standing in an offside position after a VAR check.
Burnley, buoyed by that decision, had their best spell of the game thereafter, but substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson wasted their golden opportunity to even things up.
Substitute Diogo Jota punished Vincent Kompany’s men with his late strike wrapping up the three points and send his team back to the summit of the table before Arsenal host West Ham in a London derby on Thursday night.
Jürgen Klopp now has the best 100% record on Boxing Day in Premier League history, overtaking Mauricio Pochettino with six wins, scoring an impressive 19 goals conceding just one goal and keeping five clean sheets.
Klopp’s men had a total of 19 shots and worked Trafford into eight saves, hitting the woodwork once and having two goals disallowed.
Burnley won the Championship last season with 101 points but have had little joy in the Premier League and are staring at an immediate return to the second tier.
