The alleged treasonable atrocities by ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, if committed in China, would have earned him death by firing squad, says Mr Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga, who is the Special Adviser Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, write on his “X” post on Friday.
Onanuga was reacting to the report by the Special Investigator probing the CBN, Jim Obazee, who discovered that 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom and China where Emefiele stashed Nigerian funds without authorization by the Board and Investment Committee of the bank.
Persecondnews had reported that Obazee had in his report recommended the prosecution of Emefiele and at least 13 other people, including his deputy governors, for alleged gross financial offences.
In the UK alone, the Special Investigator said his probe led him to 543.4 million Pounds kept by Mr Emefiele in fixed deposit accounts. He also said Mr Emefiele manipulated the Naira exchange rate and perpetrated fraud in the e-Naira project of the CBN.
Onanuga wrote: “If Godwin Emefiele and his gang had committed these egregious misappropriations in China, they will by now be facing the firing squad for high treason.”
Emefiele is already undergoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged illegal contract awards and procurement fraud.
He is currently remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre (Prison), Abuja, for failing to meet his bail conditions and he might be spending the Christmas and New Year in the facility.
