Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State’s convoy has been reportedly attacked by gunmen in Lokoja, the state capital, leaving some of his security aides injured.

The attack was launched on the governor on Saturday at noon near the Naval Base.

According to report, the gunmen barricaded the road and shot sporadically at the convoy.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, said the attack was masterminded by some people believed to be in the opposition in the state.

He, however, said the governor was unhurt.

“The governor left the scene unscathed and there is no cause for panic as the Governor is in high spirits.

“The Governor has warned that no APC member should involve in any reprisal attack as insecurity from any quarter will be met with stiff penalties,” Fanwo said.

He urged security agents to launch an investigation into the incident and apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Persecondnews recalls that the governorship poll in the state has been scheduled for November 11.

After Gov. Bello’s two-term tenure which ends in November, his ally and former Auditor General of Local Governments in the state, Mr Usman Ododo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate is being sponsored by the governor to succeed him.

Other candidates for the election include Sen. Dino Melaye of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
