Barely 17 days to the May 29 exit date of Plateau Government, state public service workers have commenced an indefinite strike to push through their demands after the expiration of their four-day extension of the earlier seven days ultimatum.
According to Comrade Titus Malau, the Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council in the state, the action became inevitable as the government is not committed to addressing the issues affecting workers.
Persecondnews reports that the Council resolved to embark on an industrial action following the inability of Gov. Simon Bako Lalong’s administration to meet the demands of the workers which include backlog of promotions and non-implementation of existing salary structure.
A statement by the unions said: “It is evidently clear that government has not shown enough commitment to address the issues as presented in our charter of demands before its tenure expires as earlier promised.
“However, following a joint meeting between the JNC and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC)/Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership, it was resolved that an indefinite strike action be declared.
“The action is imperative since government reneged in fulfilling its own part of the agreement despite a series of promises.”
The Council also implored all affiliated members to comply with the guidelines of the industrial action as any breach of the directive would attract sanctions.
“We are, therefore, directing all our affiliate unions that strike commenced from midnight of 10th May 2023,” it said.
