The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and APC chieftain, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, is to cool his heels in prison in Kano till March 7 for alleged murders.
A Kano Magistrate’s Court ordered that the lawmaker should be remanded at Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre (prison) until March 7 pending his bail application.
Persecondnews reports that Doguwa is facing trial for criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of firearms, mischief and public disturbance.
When his case came up for mention on Wednesday, the prosecution had urged the court to remand him pending the conclusion of investigations on the case by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
But the accused’s counsel, Mr Abdul Adamu pleaded that he should be granted bail on self-recognizance as a member of the House of Representatives as well as member-elect of the 10th National Assembly.
In his ruling after hearing arguments from both sides on the bail application, the Senior Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Mansur Yola, said the majority leader should be remanded till March 7, 2023 and adjourned the case until March 7.
Doguwa was on apprehended on Wednesday (March 1, 2023) at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while trying to escape from the state over the alleged killing of six people in Kano during the February 25 polls.
He was said to have gone under since the incident.
Doguwa, who represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State in the National Assembly, allegedly led an attack on the collation centre of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in his constituency which resulted in the deaths of about six people.
According to reports, Doguwa was declared winner of the House of Representatives election by an INEC official at gunpoint.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesman for the State Police Command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said: “Yes, we have arrested Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, in connection with a murder case.
“He is currently in our custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”
