After four years without a board, the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was on Wednesday inaugurated by the Federal Government.
The Senate had on December 20 2022 confirmed the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, Ms Lauretta Ifeanyi Onochie from Delta State as the Chairman of NDDC board, in spite of calls by Nigerians not to confirm her and a court order.
The Upper Chambers also confirmed nine others into the board of the Commission which has been without a board for almost four years.
Persecondnews earlier reported that a Federal High Court in Abuja had stopped the National Assembly from screening and confirming Mrs Lauretta Onochie and Chief Samuel Ogbuku.
Their nominations were challenged by a lawyer, Chief Edward Ekpokpo, and Engr. Victor Wood on behalf of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality.
Inaugurating the board, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, urged the new board to make policies that will fast track development in the Niger Delta region.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Mrs Sharon Ikeazu, said there was need to restore hope to the Niger Delta region after several years of neglect.
