The Federal Government on Wednesday foreclosed any negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the pro-rata October salary paid to the lecturers after calling off their eight-month-long strike.

An indication to this effect was given on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu in an interview with State House correspondents in Abuja.

Adamu’s media briefing came after attending the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

He reaffirmed the position of the government that “the lecturers would not be paid for work not done.”

Persecondnews recalls that ASUU members had protested in the various universities the pro-rata October salary payment which they described as converting them to casual workers.

ASUU President and Professor of Soil Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, had reacted that paying the lecturers on pro-rata basis was a ploy by the government to make them casual workers.

While reacting to ASUU’s statement, the Education Minister said: “Nobody can make university lecturers casual workers.”

Adamu also said he was not aware of  protest by the university teachers against the pro-rata salary payment.
