Okada ban: Chaos on Abuja Airport Road as motorcyclists, task force clash

104

There was pandemonium on Monday along the airport road/federal housing in Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory as commercial motorcyclists in the area clashed with task force for impounding their motorcyles.

They were reported to have attacked Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and laid seige along with some miscreants on the expressway in Lugbe which leads to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, burning tyres and hurling stones at commuters and vehicles passing the road.

Persecondnews gathered that the  Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) had banned commercial motorcycles in the area as they were being used to rob people and carry out other forms of crimes, but most of them had ignored the ban.

A resident, Eche Ogbole, who spoke with Persecondnews said only tricycles were allowed in the area because most of the commercial motorcyclists were in the habit of robbing passengers, especially at night.

“They banned Okada in this area because most of them use it to rob passengers, especially at night. Three months ago, one of them even stabbed a young man after robbing him around 9 p.m. Most of them are criminals,” he said.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filling this report, the FCT Police Command has restored normalcy in the area.

Reacting to the attack, Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, DSP Josephine Adeh,  disclosed that upon the receipt of the information, operatives from Iddo Divisional Police Headquarters were swiftly drafted to the scene.

According to her, the operatives had taken necessary measures to restore peace and normalcy.

“Monitoring and surveillance will continue in the area while efforts are being made to arrest the miscreants responsible for the disturbance,” she said.
