Bowing to pressure and good reason, the embattled British Prime Minister, Mr Boris Johnson, has given up his office.

Elected in 2019 into parliament, Johnson resigned both as the leader of the Conservative Party in the House and  as prime minister.

Persecondnews reports that Johnson announced his resignation on Thursday afternoon at his office — 10, Downing Street, London.

There had been calls for Johnson’s resignation from his party members with about 50 leaders of the party resigning from government positions.

He, however, indicated that he will remain in office until the Conservative Party elects a new leader who will also assume office as prime minister.

The election is expected to take place before October 2022.

In his speech, Johnson thanked the Conservative Party and the British voters for trusting the party and helping it to victory in the 2019 elections.

“I want you to know how sad I am giving up the best job in the world.

“In politics, no one is indispensable. From now on until the new prime minister is in place, the interest of the British people will continue to be served,” he said.

Johnson promised to support the new leader expected to emerge soon.

The timetable for choosing a new leader will be released next week.
