Unspecified number of people have been reported roasted in an inferno caused by two petrol tankers that collided at Omurelu community along the Elele-Owerri Road in Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday.
Persecondnews gathered that the incident happened when one of the tankers conveying fuel was flagged down by a petroleum taskforce operating in the area.
According to reports, the taskforce was trying to ‘extort’ the tanker driver, when another tanker at full tilt lost control and rammed into it at the checkpoint.
“The two tankers fell, spilled their contents, and burst into flames.
“The fire spread into the community and consumed human beings and houses.
“It is a disaster as valuable properties were destroyed and some residents severely injured in the process,” a witness said.
