A one-time Minister of Information and Culture in the retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida military administration has passed on.

Retired Brig.-Gen. Stephen Anthony Ukpo, who also served as the military governor of Rivers, reportedly died in the early hours of Monday, September 6 at Asi Ukpo hospital in Calabar, the Cross River capital.

Ukpo, who has been feeling unwell and has been in and out of hospital, was taken to the facility on Sunday night when his condition deteriorated before he passed on.

Persecondnews recalls that an ex-Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, a veteran journalist and politician, had died on February 1, 2021.

He also served in the Babangida regime.

Born in Okpama in Northern part of Cross River in July 1947, the deceased has been out of public glare in recent times.

Ukpo, who celebrated his 70th birthday in 2019, had between 1986 and 1992 served as Minister of Information and Culture and Rivers governor.

The Ukpo family had recently lost Senator Paul Ukpo and a one-time governorship candidate in the state, Mr Mark Ukpo as well as two of the ex-governor’s siblings, Emmanuel Ukpo and Lilian Ukpo.
